HISTORY & MILESTONES
Back in 1843, Frederick T. Stanley founded the Stanley Works in New Britain, Connecticut, USA and began constructing tools like none other of their kind. A unique history of delivering hardworking, innovative, and powerful tools soon followed, empowering and enabling generations of Craftsmen, Professionals and DIY users alike. This inspiration continues in every tool bearing his name today. From the humble tape measure to advanced digitally connected measuring devices, our tools remain benchmarks for quality and durability and continue to help build the World around us.
1854
STANLEY begins to manufacture boxwood rules.
STANLEY begins manufacturing levels.
1857
STANLEY introduces hammers to their line-up.
1863
1869
STANLEY purchases Bailey, Chaney and Company and acquired the right to manufacture tools under Bailey’s patents.
STANLEY began manufacturing screwdrivers.
1870
1920
Originally used in 1920, the STANLEY Sweetheart range was introduced as a memorial to The Stanley Works long-time president, William Hart (1884-1915), and celebrating the merger of the Stanley Rule & Level Company and the Stanley Works.
STANLEY introduces the first steel tape rule.
1931
1936
STANLEY introduces utility knives in 1936.
STANLEY builds the largest hand tool plant in the world in New Britain, CT. The same year, we introduced the PowerLock® Tape Rule.

The PowerLock® Tape Rule represented Stanley as part of Apollo 11’s Lunar Landing Gear.
STANLEY introduces the FatMax® Tape Rule and the FatMax Anti-Vibe® Hammer.
1999

STANLEY re-introduces Sweetheart planes.
STANLEY launches carbide blades.

STANLEY heads into the future of smart measuring with over 75 years experience.
